The race to build data centers

Amazon, Google and Microsoft are building data centers around the globe "at a breakneck pace" to be ready for two developments that will change the world of technology, Jason Hiner writes. Cloud computing (delivering applications and services over the Internet) and utility computing (delivering server capacity on demand over the Internet) are expected to require massive data center capabilities, and Hiner predicts that demand for these offerings may draw IBM and Hewlett-Packard into the competition as well.
