The folks over at Land ID came out with a list of called “America’s Next Mountain Boom Towns” this Montana town not only made the list, but it ranked first.

The U.S. News rankings apply to 2026, setting a near-term benchmark for residential desirability.

Land ID has named Columbia Falls Montana’s next big mountain boom town, while U.S. News & World Report has released its rankings of the best places to live in the state for 2026. These assessments highlight shifting residential preferences and economic patterns across Montana’s varied towns.

Columbia Falls, with a population just under 6,000, a median age near 35, and median household income around $75,000, is positioned near Glacier National Park and Whitefish. Its land prices for a typical 5-acre lot are comparable to home lot prices in Bozeman, which itself is noted as Montana’s “it” town with average single-family home prices near $850,000. Other Montana towns show a broad range of median home prices, from Whitefish’s $1.2 to $1.3 million down to Butte’s $300,000. Helena ranks as the best place to live according to U.S. News, while Billings, the largest city, experiences a high crime rate.

 

For Montana businesses and investors, Columbia Falls’ emergence as a boom town could signal new opportunities linked to its relative affordability and proximity to natural attractions.
