Startups — the micro approach

A Seattle incubator is thinking small, very small, about the next consumer Internet applications

For Kelly Smith and Adrian Hanauer, smaller really is better.

The co-founders of a newly formed business incubator and investment firm in Seattle’s Pioneer Square neighborhood believe that some of the most intriguing Internet ideas of the past 24 months — from HousingMaps.com to BitTorrent — have been created by individuals or small groups of developers working out of their basements, garages or college dorm rooms.

Now, the two business executives and longtime friends are hoping to support these often overlooked innovators through Curious Office Partners — a $1 million fund that will write checks for as little as $10,000 and as much as $250,000.

That’s peanuts in the venture capital world, where many investors can’t dabble in investments that small because of the size of their funds.
