Paris is replacing 60,000 parking spaces with trees
December 11, 2024/
‘Our motto is, imagine that every parked car is a tree.’
On a recent weekday, workers stood on top of former parking spaces on a street in the center of Paris. The cars were gone: The pavement at the side of the road had been removed and filled with soil. The crew planted a large magnolia tree in one former parking spot, then moved down the street and repeated the process.
It was one step in a much larger project: The city aims to convert around 60,000 parking spaces into green space by 2030. On some streets, a handful of spots are disappearing. Others, like a side road on Rue de Meaux that used to have parking on both sides, have essentially become small parks.
