Opinion: Driving Montana’s broadband development with SB 297

Sen. Jason Ellsworth

Right now the legislature is working to appropriate the federal funding that Montana is receiving as part of the Covid stimulus package. These funds are for one-time use and cannot be used to backfill the state budget in the future. Therefore, we must make the best of these funds, and Republicans are working to do just that.

The legislature maintains the power of the purse, and we will target the money toward supporting our communities that need it most and preparing our state’s economy to thrive throughout the 21st Century.

Part of the package specifically sets aside funds for broadband Internet projects. I have been working hard to pass multiple bills that will develop our broadband infrastructure, and this stimulus money offers a unique chance to continue advancing Montana’s Internet capabilities.
