Noticeable Shift Occurring in Technology Commercialization in Greater Philadelphia

This is only one of many examples in the Philadelphia region of how investors, universities, research institutions, and other stakeholders are taking new approaches and a sharper focus to the 30-plus year tradition of formally transferring technologies out of universities.

The University of Pennsylvania wanted to make the tech transfer process more user-friendly, so last May, they created UPSTART http://www.ctt.upenn.edu/upstart.html , an innovative program that provides a one-stop shop for Penn faculty to form a start-up company in direct collaboration with the university.
