Museums and paleontological (The Montana Dinosaur Trail) tourism sites across Montana are doing more than preserving history and fossils — they are also driving local spending and earning high marks from visitors, according to a new report.

Researchers at the University of Montana’s Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research examined the contributions of Montana’s museums and paleontological tourism sites. The study included interviews with several museum professionals and a review of more than 500 visitor surveys collected from museums across the state.

The report found that visitors who responded to the survey spent a combined total of more than $352,000 locally.

Visitor satisfaction was also strong. Nearly 92% of respondents reported having an “excellent or outstanding experience.”
