MSU Wins $10.7M NIH Grant to Launch The Center for Advanced Molecular Pathogenesis – CAMP

Montana State University secured a $10.7 million NIH grant to launch a new biomedical research center.

The university was awarded funds from the NIH Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence program to establish the Center for Advanced Molecular Pathogenesis, or CAMP, aimed at expanding research capacity and workforce development in Montana. This structural investment targets early-career scientists and advanced scientific infrastructure.

CAMP will support three initial faculty members focusing on infectious diseases and pathogenesis, providing access to cutting-edge imaging technologies such as cryo-electron microscopy. Over the next five years, the center plans to recruit additional researchers, offer pilot funding for early-stage projects, and provide mentorship to build independent research programs. Alison Harmon, MSU’s vice president for research and economic development, described the grant as “an investment in people and in Montana’s future.”

CAMP’s activities will unfold during the next five years, supporting ongoing growth in Montana’s biomedical research landscape.

This grant will help MSU attract scientific talent and foster collaborations that leverage the state’s unique environment. Such developments may also stimulate local economic diversification beyond traditional sectors.
