Montana Tech launches new nuclear energy programs

Montana Technological University is launching two new programs designed to prepare students for careers in the growing nuclear energy industry.

The undergraduate certificate in Nuclear Energy and Master of Science in Nuclear Energy were approved by the Montana Board of Regents in March 2026. The programs are designed to complement Montana Tech’s existing engineering and STEM programs while helping build the workforce needed to meet future energy demands.

“Montana is at an energy crossroads,” Lance Energy Chair Bob Morris said in a press release. “We’ve been a net energy exporter for 50 years, but as coal comes offline, we risk no longer producing enough energy for ourselves.”
