Montana State University named one of top design schools in U.S.

Montana State University was named one of the top 78 design schools in the nation by Graphic Design USA in April.

MSU’s graphic design program earned national recognition for fostering innovation and critical thinking, highlighting its structural role in preparing students for professional success. This accolade reflects the program’s integration of real-world projects and evolving curriculum.

Students collaborated on community initiatives, such as designing and auctioning skateboards in March 2026 to raise $13,556 for local skateparks, and created a suicide prevention coin minted by Montana in 2024, with 100 coins distributed to military veterans. Faculty emphasize a broad curriculum including digital media, sustainable design, and printmaking, supported by mentorship and national competitions. Three seniors won GDUSA awards, and internships with MSU Athletics and businesses provide practical experience. Nick Schneider produced over 140 graphics this semester and will continue his internship through summer into his senior year, while Emma Poole completed hers on May 1 and will graduate next year.

Looking ahead, these internships remain key components of MSU’s professional preparation approach.
