Montana sheds more than 5,000 jobs in September – first job loss since 2020

Nine states and the District of Columbia saw job losses in the year ending in September, with the District of Columbia experiencing the largest decline.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nine states including Montana lost jobs while South Carolina posted the strongest gains, highlighting a structural contrast in regional economies. This may reflect shifting labor market dynamics influenced by federal workforce changes and private sector investments.

Job losses ranged from 1% in Montana, equating to 5,300 jobs, to 3.5% in the District of Columbia, a loss of 25,800 jobs linked to federal workforce cuts under the Trump administration. South Carolina led job growth with a 2.3% increase or 55,200 jobs, concentrated in construction, health care, and leisure and hospitality sectors supported by manufacturing investments and workforce training. Hiring has commenced for a BMW battery factory, and training is underway for workers at the planned Scout Motors plant.

As these developments unfold, workforce shifts in other states might respond to similar industry investments or federal employment changes.
