Montana construction industry working to recruit the next generation of labor

Missoula and Bitterroot students competed in hammering nails into boards of wood, were lifted feet above the ground in a boom lift and moved piles of dirt with a skid steer as part of a hands-on learning event hosted by the Montana Contractors Association Wednesday.

The event just outside of Missoula gave eighth grade and high school students a chance to try their hand at new construction skills. With Montana’s growth boom the demand for construction talent is high for both commercial and residential projects.

Through these “pop-up” interactive events held around the state, the Montana Contractors Association is working to connect their members with the next generation of workers. Seven companies set up stations to give students a taste of the work they could do with them on a job site — from glass installation to excavator operation.
