Missoula seeks residents’ input on train horn noise issue

Residents in the Lower Rattlesnake and Heart of Missoula neighborhoods are being asked to share their thoughts on train horn noise at the Madison-Spruce crossing. The city has launched a survey to determine if a noise-reduction project should move forward and how it will be funded.

The city is particularly interested in hearing from those living closest to the crossing. The survey aims to understand the impact of train horn noise on residents and whether they would support funding the project through a special improvement district.

Jeremy Keene, Public Works & Mobility Director, said, “Yeah, what we’re trying to do is gauge public interest in funding this project through a special improvement district, since it influences a pretty small area. The train noise is fairly isolated to this neighborhood. We’re asking those folks what they think, how big of an impact it is on their lives and what’s our willingness to help pay for it.”

The survey will close on December 5, and the city plans to review the responses through the end of the month before making a recommendation. Residents can participate online through Engage Missoula, with a focus on those most affected by the train horn noise.
