Missoula, Montana led population gains in the state between 2024-25

City of Missoula

In Montana, Missoula marked the largest population growth up 718 new residents to 79,000. Billings led the population decline down 206 people to 121,000.

The U.S. Census Bureau reported that cities like New York and Los Angeles experienced population drops after previous increases, contrasting with mid-sized cities such as Charlotte and Fort Worth, which recorded the largest numeric gains. This shift may reflect changing migration patterns and housing dynamics in urban America.

Census Bureau statistician Matt Erickson noted that big-city growth slowed significantly due to declines in immigration and asylum seekers, particularly after late 2024. Mid-sized cities found a “Goldilocks zone” balancing domestic and international migration with new housing developments, as exemplified by Charlotte’s increase of 20,731 residents. Meanwhile, Missoula is seeking up to $1.5 million through a federal Safe Streets For All grant to improve safety on Reserve Street, a corridor marked by over 60 serious injuries and three fatalities between 2019 and 2023. The city must provide a 20% local match and plans to implement quick-build safety interventions at four intersections.

Updated population estimates are expected to be released on May 14.

For Montana businesses, these trends could signal shifting consumer bases and commuting patterns. Missoula’s focus on improving Reserve Street safety may also affect freight and retail logistics, underscoring the importance of investing in infrastructure amid changing urban demographics.
