Meet the state delegates for the inaugural Western Governors’ Leadership Institute

The Western Governors’ Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Western Governors’ Association, will host 21 western students from 14 states and tribes at the inaugural Western Governors’ Leadership Institute on July 25. Designed to promote and encourage the effective exercise of leadership by young adults across the West, the Institute’s leadership development forum will include speeches from former Governors Dennis Daugaard (South Dakota), Steve Bullock (Montana), Roy Romer (Colorado), and Carl Gutierrez (Guam), as well as Arizona Gov. 2022 Annual Meeting kicks off next week

The Western Governors’ Association is excited to welcome eight Western Governors and four Cabinet Secretaries to its Annual Meeting in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, next week (July 26-28).

During the three day event, the Governors will discuss the most important issues facing the region, including wildfire, drought, cybersecurity, and the supply chain with a diverse slate of regional experts. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Dennis McDonough, and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg will also provide keynote addresses and sit for roundtable discussions with the Governors. View the full agenda here.

Western Governors urge Congress to permanently expand telehealth services
In a letter to Congress, Western Governors urged lawmakers to expand telehealth services by establishing permanent regulatory and statutory changes based on temporary waivers and authorizations. “Telehealth helps address the challenges faced by our states, especially related to behavioral health, and serves as a critical tool to advance access in rural areas and among underserved populations,” the letter read. “Expansion of telehealth service is a significant priority for us as we contemplate strategies to increase access to care.” Read, download the letter for the full set of recommendations.
Out West podcast delves into diversifying the economies of coal communities
Supporting Coal Communities, the latest episode of ‘Out West,’ explores the economic trends impacting Utah’s coal communities in the face of changing energy markets and state efforts to bolster economic development opportunities in those areas. Listen in as WGA Senior Policy Advisor, Lauren DeNinno, speaks with Alyssa Kay, Director of Program Development for the Utah Office of Energy Development, and Geri Gamber, the Executive Director of the Southeastern Utah Association of Local Governments. Together they discuss specific programs that the state has pursued to support rural economic development, like the San Rafael Energy Research Center, which works to diversify the state’s energy portfolio and help employees in the coal industry transition their skills to new economic sectors. Western Governors approve five new policy resolutions; elect new leadership

Western Governors formally approved five policy resolutions during their annual executive session at the end of WGA’s fiscal year (June 30). The resolutions represent the Governors’ collective policy on: National Minerals Policy; Radioactive Materials Management; Federal-State Land Exchanges and Purchases; Biosecurity and Invasive Species Management; and Recreation and Tourism on Public Lands. Read, download the resolutions to see the Governors’ full slate of policy positions.

The Western Governors also elected Colorado Gov. Jared Polis as the new Chair of the Western Governors’ Association and Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon as the new Vice Chair. Gov. Polis will announce his Chair Initiative at WGA’s Annual Meeting in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, on July 26-28.
