FY 2019 PILT Payments

The total of the Payment of Lieu of Taxes (PILT) payments dispersed to Montana Counties for FY 2019 (dispersed June 2019) is $33,990,204, compared to $40,073,049 received last June (FFY 2018 payment)—a decrease of $6,082,845.  This decrease is due to the deduction of prior-year payments from the total.  This year’s “prior-year payments” deduction adds up to $163,395,154.

MACo HCT Seeking Member Services Coordinator

The Montana Association of Counties (MACo) is seeking a Member Services Coordinator for its Health Care Trust (HCT). The primary focus of this position is to provide member service functions and marketing support related to the employee benefit plans and programs on behalf of the MACo HCT.  Employees in this position must possess considerable knowledge and experience in marketing, health insurance and employee health benefit programs. This position has extensive contacts with MACo members, MACo staff, Elected Officials, governing boards, and participating member groups.

Gianforte, Daines Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Fix PILT for Montana Counties

Would modify current formula, increasing funding for smaller counties 
On July 11th, Congressman Greg Gianforte and Senator Steve Daines introduced the bipartisan Small County Payment In Lieu of Taxes (PILT) Parity Act.  The federal government pays PILT funds to a county government to offset the loss of property taxes from federally owned lands in that county. County governments use PILT funds to pay for vital county public services, including school construction, roads, law enforcement, and emergency services. Based on the current PILT formula, per capita funding increases as population decreases. The funding remains unchanged, however, when a county’s population is less than 5,000, putting lower-population counties at a disadvantage.Learn More >>

Western Region Day at the White House

What, When Who?
This summer the White House is arranging a similar regional event for Montana, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Alaska, which is scheduled for September 10th.    The meeting is designed for county (commissioners/supervisors) and municipal officials and will include briefings and discussion with Senior Administration Officials on shared federal-state-local priorities pertinent to you.Find Out More >>

Robert Keith “Bob” Phillips, 92, passed away peacefully at home on May 19, 2019, from natural causes, having lived his first nine decades without darkening the doors of hospitals or doctors’ offices.  Born January 8, 1927 to Robert J. and Cora Geary Phillips in a log cabin at the base of the South Moccasin Mountains, Bob grew up on a ranch that remains in the family today.Read More >>
