Lewistown and 7 other eastern Montana communities retain passenger air service

Passenger air service to Lewistown and seven other eastern Montana communities will continue for another year, Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-Mont.), announced Monday.

Funds to continue what is called Essential Air Service were included in the Fiscal Year 2006 Transportation spending bill approved by the House. Rehberg, who helped draft the measure, is a member of the House Appropriations Committee.

Along with Lewistown, seven other communities will have continued service. Those are Glasgow, Glendive, Havre, Miles City, Sidney, Wolf Point and West Yellowstone. Six of those communities are served by Big Sky Airlines, and West Yellowstone is served by Sky West.

Jerry Moline, manager of the Lewistown Municipal Airport, said Wednesday he expects service to Lewistown and the other airports served by Big Sky Airlines will be re-bid in December. Other airlines from time to time have expressed an interest in serving Lewistown, but Big Sky has been successful bidder for many years, Moline said.
