A recent installation of solar panels near Helena’s Transportation Systems building is set to save on energy costs and contribute to the city’s goal of reducing its carbon footprint. The project, which cost a total of $140,000, was made possible with the help of a $50,000 grant from Northwestern Energy’s Universal System Benefits program. The project also qualifies for rebates through the Inflation Reduction Act.

Approximately 130 solar panels were installed, generating around $2,800 worth of electricity and producing about 17,000 kWh of energy since their installation. These panels provide around one-third of the energy needed by the Transportation Systems building. Not only does the use of solar energy make sense in terms of stabilizing the grid and facilities, but it also brings the city closer to achieving its clean energy goals.
