How Silcon Valley got its vision

It’s been 30 years since the organization now known as the Silicon Valley Leadership Group was formed to bring the clout of the valley’s chief executives to bear on some of the region’s biggest problems.

From the beginning, it had a couple of things going for it: It was launched by David Packard, co-founder of Hewlett-Packard, whose stature was unquestioned, and it was designed to draw on one of the valley’s key assets – hundreds of chief executives.

The group began with a lunch meeting in Palo Alto organized by Packard, who told the select gathering of CEOs it was in their best interest to act before the valley’s over-stressed infrastructure was unable to support its rapidly growing high-tech industry.
