Great Falls Proposing to Host Annual Ironman Races Starting 2027

Great Falls aims to host Ironman races annually from 2027 through 2029.

The Great Falls Tourism Business Improvement District has proposed hosting the Ironman triathlon on Aug. 15, 2027, Aug. 13, 2028, and Aug. 12, 2029, contingent on city commission approval and further planning. This marks a potential structural shift in Great Falls’ tourism and event hosting strategy.

The proposal includes a support services agreement under city commission consideration, with Great Falls Montana Tourism committed to paying licensing fees and covering related costs to shield local government from expenses. Multiple public agencies and advisory boards have been involved in discussions over the past several months. City staff reports outline a three-year framework for planning and cost reimbursement, capping administrative expenses at 10% of direct costs, and limiting advance payments to 25% of estimated city expenditures. Comparable Ironman events have attracted approximately 1,800 competitors, suggesting significant economic impact potential.

On Oct. 6, the TBID and the City Commissioners will review the support services agreement, while TBID must also submit detailed operational plans for each event year.

The city’s existing hotel capacity may position it well to capitalize on visitor influxes, though the scope of local government’s involvement and costs remains a critical consideration.
