Google, South Dakota company team up on balloon project for Internet Connectivity

Sioux Falls-based Raven Industries http://ravenind.com/ is partnering with Google to provide high-speed wireless Internet accessibility to rural, remote and underserved areas.

Raven Aerostar division contributed 30 translucent helium balloons that span 60 feet in height and can fly at an altitude of 66,000 feet, or 12 miles above Earth. The company also helped develop the flight control system. Using software developed by Google, the balloons can provide Internet access from the sky as they float over remote areas of the world.
