Futurist calls for more tech grads – Not everyone needs a college degree, he says

South Dakota has fared well in the midst of the nation’s economic downturn, but the state isn’t immune, a futurist told a group of Sioux Falls business professionals Tuesday.

"You should be thankful for the jobs you have here," said Ed Barlow of Michigan-based Creating the Future.

Barlow spoke at a breakfast sponsored by Forward Sioux Falls and the South Dakota Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The session focused on work force development, a challenge facing almost every business in Sioux Falls. The area’s unemployment rate in August was 2.6 percent, compared with a nationwide rate of 6.1 percent. Economists generally consider 4 percent to be full employment.
