Engineers agressive when it comes to recruiting engineers

Among the stacks of paper atop Al Schauer’s desk sits a glass jar filled with grainy white residue and labeled: "Ashes of Problem Employees."

Schauer, 58, insists the morbid paperweight doesn’t reflect his management style as president and chief executive officer of MacKay & Sposito Inc., Vancouver. The civil engineering firm’s employees appreciate the joke.

"It is very sick, but it’s that little bit of sick humor that engineers seem to enjoy," Schauer said. "We’re a little nerdy.

Nerdy, but in high demand, said Schauer, who budgets more than $25,000 annually to pay travel and hotel expenses that bring potential engineering recruits to the firm, which specializes in pre-design work for projects throughout Washington and Oregon.
