In recent days and weeks, schemes have arisen in which a payroll employee receives an email from a company "executive" (really, a scammer with a slightly-fake email address) asking the payroll staff to scan a copy of all W-2 forms for the company.
There is no legitimate reason for such a request. The information on the W-2s can be used to file fake tax returns. Employers– train payroll staff on this important scam! The IRS’s warning on this scam can be found here.
