Discover the ghost town of Montague in central Montana’s Chouteau County
October 31, 2018 /
It’s hard to believe 1,000 people have ever been in this tiny town down a gravel road in Chouteau County.
But on a fine summer day in 1925, the Montague Commercial Club’s 10th annual picnic drew 1,000 for baseball (Fort Benton beat Geraldine 13-6), oration, horse races, foot races and Ford races, with music from a Fort Benton band.
These days the town is quiet. White Lake is to the east, and cliffs of the Shonkin Sag are to the West. Broadway is a few hundred feet long, but no business lines the way anymore. A couple houses and an old schoolhouse make up the town.
