City Club Missoula – Housing, growth and economics at center of downtown Missoula planning update

While progress is evident across downtown Missoula and each of its major corridors, city leaders have raised $400,000 to fund a new round of planning, one intended to guide the district up, and into the future.

Little more than a decade ago, downtown Missoula was at a crossroads. Retail anchors sat empty and large parking lots consumed city blocks. Investment was lacking and pedestrian circulation was questionable.

The time had come to craft a cohesive plan guiding the district’s future.

"We had almost 3,000 people participate in that planning project," said Linda McCarthy, executive director of the Downtown Missoula Partnership. "It was approved by a number of organizations and agencies, which got us all on the same page and helped guide all the decision making that has happened downtown over the past 10 years."

Missoula City Club provides updates to downtown master plan

“This community is so invested in making and keeping Missoula special that it doesn’t surprise me that they are willing to write a check and invest in that," said Missoula Redevelopment agency director Ellen Buchanan. "I think that everybody has seen how successful this current master plan has been in guiding decisions, whether they be decisions being made by the City of Missoula, or whether they are private investment decisions or even decisions being made by the state.”

Parking, housing, funding: Missoula City Club discusses Downtown Master Plan update

It wasn’t surprising that many of the questions about a new Downtown Master Plan for Missoula involved affordable housing during the monthly City Club Missoula meeting on Monday.

City officials, members of the public, private business owners and regular workers all wanted to know how to create housing that a person earning a modest paycheck can afford in the urban core of the city.
