Careful, or Main Street will be like anywhere else.

When my husband and I travel to new towns and cities, we look for the more “local” places to frequent. The everyday, run-of-the-mill buildings don’t attract us but the unusual building, sign or catchy name do.

On Main Street there exists The Garage. It is a converted old garage that has been a restaurant for a long time in Bozeman. In the summer it is always full inside and out in the patio. It has good basic fare and the soup shack. It and the Western Cafe are attractions for residents and visitors alike.

This is yet another warning to every Montana community that has old and unique buildings that are the attraction to visitors. Don’t let them be replaced with new chrome, glass and square “improvement” buildings that can be seen in any other 500 cities. Preserve the character and interest in your main street and you will be repaid long into the future as travelers continue to seek out experiences.
If the building can’t be preserved, then replace it as exactly as possible with new construction at least on the first and possibly second floors. It’s not that difficult.
