Australia to Require AI Data Centers to Fund Clean Energy by 2027

“Every country on earth is grappling with these challenges right now. Australia will be the first country in the world to bring these issues into a single, national framework,” Albanese added.

The Australian government, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, announced legislation to require sizable AI data centers to underwrite new renewable power supplies and fully cover grid connection costs. This move aims to require large AI data centers to fund new renewable power supplies and cover grid connection costs.

Under the upcoming law, expected in early 2027, AI data centers must not only pay their full share of grid connection expenses but also potentially reduce power use during critical periods and meet water use requirements. Prime Minister Albanese emphasized that data centers should become net energy contributors, adding as much energy into the grid as they consume, thereby supporting national energy resilience and preventing increased power prices for other users. Australia aims to be the first country to bring these issues into a single, national framework.

Details on specific power reduction and water use mandates will be clarified before implementation.

While Montana was not mentioned, this initiative could offer a cautionary example for states with rising data center investments. Montana’s abundant natural resources and evolving energy policies might influence how such facilities balance energy demands and environmental obligations if similar regulatory trends emerge.
