American Prairie Foundation (American Prairie) is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation working to create the largest nature reserve in the contiguous United States, a refuge for people and wildlife preserved forever as part of America’s heritage. We run programmatic and operational functions in our project area with administrative and development functions based in Bozeman, Montana.

Volunteer Caretaker:  This role will support public access during the fall hunting season on American Prairie’s new 73 property located approximately 40 miles northwest of Winnett, Montana. This volunteer role will monitor public traffic as well as movements of resident wildlife.

American Prairie’s 73 property is located along the lower Musselshell River in a remote region of northcentral Montana. This historic property borders the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge and is home to abundant wildlife, including a significant elk population. The position comes with housing (which may occasionally be shared with itinerant American Prairie staff) or the provision for parking a camping trailer. The property is accessed via 25 miles of gravel and unimproved road which becomes impassable when wet and requires an AWD or 4WD vehicle. The property contains a great variety of terrain, from riparian areas and cottonwood groves along the river, to steep uplands with ponderosa forests, and open valleys. The volunteer role will have access to recreate on the property (hike, bike, hunt, fish) throughout their service.
