Commission places Literacy Bitterroot levy on ballot

Terry Ryan said she and her husband provided the temporary funding and cited the story of one student who used Literacy Bitterroot as a game changer for his life.

"Obtaining a high school degree almost doubles your income for life," Ryan said.

She said additional training that results from receiving a high school diploma is an increased return on investment.

"Let’s do the math," Ryan said. "It costs Literacy Bitterroot about $1,000 per student. They have been graduating an average of 50 students a year, which is more than Darby and Victor High Schools combined."

She said the 25 students that go on from their graduation will earn more and pay more than $2,000 per year additionally in taxes.

"That’s a 100 percent return on the community’s investment in this program every year," Ryan said. "There is also a saving to the community in reduced costs of welfare programs, law enforcement and prison fees. Passing this levy is totally in our own self-interest."
