This weekend is Big Sky Pride in the state of Montana.

This weekend is more than a just celebration, it is about making progress, having pride in our state and its people, and acknowledging the work still to be done.

No matter your age or where we were born, or how we look, or how and where we worship, or who we love, we gather to make progress to ensure all feel welcome not only in Montana, but across the country.

Our country is founded on the principle of equality for all.

It’s the idea that you can marry the person you love, regardless of gender. Or the idea that you don’t run the risk of losing your job simply because you put a photo of your husband or wife on your desk. Or that you can find an affordable place to live with your partner without fear of discrimination.

It’s the idea that ignorance, hatred, and threats of violence have no place in our communities. That you won’t be denied services at a community business. Or that no matter how you identify, as a youth you feel supported both in school and at home.

This is indeed the principle that our country was founded on.

But make no mistake. There are people in this country that want to discriminate based on how we look or who we love. They want to divide our nation and pit us against one another.

We are better than that and we refuse to go back on all the progress we have made.

Our solidarity is why we will prevail in these challenging times. Because when we stand together in solidarity on the principle of equality, we stand on the right side of history.

When gay and transgender teenagers in our Montana communities turn on the news this weekend they will see hundreds of folks just like them celebrating who they are, and it will let them know that we stand in solidarity with them.

And when a parent, who previously might have made a joke or disparaging comment about a gay person, proudly marches in the parade next to their gay son or daughter, we all stand in solidarity.

That is Pride. Pride in our state. Pride in our people. Pride in the progress we have made and will continue to make.

Have fun and stay safe this weekend, and always celebrate your pride, each and every day.

Sincerely,

STEVE BULLOCK

Governor
