A Sidewalk Talk Q&A with urban scholar Emily Talen on why these streets are vanishing -- and what cities can do about it.

"What happens on main street is such an integral part of activating the neighborhood. Now we've lost that. My fear is that it's been this long, slow decline, so that it becomes almost taken for granted, and increasingly you shrug your shoulders and say, well, that's the way it is."

Kudos to Great Falls and Butte.

I can only pray that Missoula will wake up and realize that one of our greatest assets is the old architecture and character of Higgins. Please please don't continue to let it be replace by "modern" architecture that anyone can see in any large city in the world.

Our unique architecture is a major reason that many people visit our city.

Our city will never be the same if we let this legacy be removed and replaced by new buildings that don't replicate its heritage.
