Missoula’s Galactic Farms launches 4 test systems to Mars…. simulation in Hawaii

Galactic Farms http://www.galacticfarms.com , based in Missoula, is excited to announce that it has sent 4 small experimental systems to be tested in a year-long Mars colony simulation.

The HI-seas.org project is based on the Big Island of Hawaii and is starting it’s 4th mission this month. 6 crew members will be stationed in an isolated base where they will live with minimal outside contact for a full year. While on this mission the crew will be preforming a variety of experiments and tests connected with living on another planet.

Galactic Farms will be working directly with Commander Carmel Johnson, a soil scientist and MSU graduate. Her project deals with sustainable food production in space and other harsh climates. Her experiment will test artificial lighting solutions, aquaponics food production and converting human waste (urine) into fertilizer. Galactic Farms provided the systems and the framework for the experiments.

It’s always been a goal of Galactic Farms to put plants in space and then use the knowledge gained to develop urban farming in harsh climates here on Earth. The Mars simulation from HI-seas is about as close as you can get to farming on another planet.
