Will Portland’s inflow of young people pay off?

Readers aren’t quite sure whether Portland’s economy will ultimately benefit from all the young people streaming into the city, even if they may not find jobs right away.

The question has been around for years, but surfaced again this week when it was highlighted in the New York Times Magazine http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/21/magazine/will-portland-always-be-a-retirement-community-for-the-young.html?_r=1 .

An OregonLive poll that launched Wednesday has so far drawn 325 votes, split evenly down the middle. Half of voters (164) felt that Portland’s influx of educated young workers will pay off economically. The other half (161) believe the opposite to be true.
