Few tech jobs in Wyoming

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) – Wyoming gained only 34 high-technology jobs from 2000 to 2001, according to a study.

After growth of 566 jobs from 1995 to 2000, a rate of more than 6 percent per year, high-tech employment grew by only 1.4 percent from 2000 to 2001.

The figures are contained in an annual report by the American Electronics Association, "Cyberstates: A State-by-State Overview of the High-Technology Industry."

The report was recently summarized in the Wyoming Employment Department’s monthly newsletter, "Wyoming Labor Force Trends."

In 2001, industry statistics showed that Wyoming had 2,422 high-tech jobs distributed among 370 establishments.

The state, which has the lowest population, ranked 52nd and last in high-tech employment. The rankings included the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Total payroll was $108 million, with an average wage of $45,211. That compares with the average private-sector wage in the state of $26,502.

Among all states, Wyoming ranked 46th in research and development per capita and 23rd in home Internet access.

U.S. Census Bureau data showed 58.5 percent of Wyoming homes had computers and 51.4 percent had Internet access in September 2001.
