Montana teens discover starting own business has benefits beyond a profit

"I can take the risk, since I’m 16 and can afford to fail," Marts said. "I can learn better here than in all the classes in college."

If his career works out as planned, teenage businessman Tommy Marts will never sing any lyrics to "Take This Job and Shove It."

"I’m going to do my own businesses my whole life. I’m never going to work for someone else," said the West High soccer player.

When his father suggested that he get a summer job, the 16-year-old didn’t fill out a single application.

Instead, Marts mapped out a business plan, incorporated his first company, navigated city hall to get approval to park a food cart under Skypoint, partnered with a commercial kitchen, landed a health department permit and an insurance policy, bought equipment and food and started flipping burgers, dogs and brats.
