The degree was created to meet a growing need for qualified medical assistants in Billings.

"Medical assistant positions are among the top 10 fastest growing occupations in the United States," said
John Cech, dean of the MSU-Billings College of Technology.
In the next 10 years, Montana will have a 54 percent increase in the number of positions requiring the skills
of a medical assistant.

The median wage for a medical assistant working in the state is $9.39 per hour.
The two-year associate of applied science degree program requires learning clerical duties associated
with a medical administrative assistant and clinical duties of a practical nurse. Students will take courses in
office procedures, records management, computer software applications, basic accounting, medical
terminology, anatomy and physiology, and pharmacology.
In addition, students will complete clinical requirements in hospitals and medical clinics throughout the
Billings region.
"Because this is an associate of applied science degree, it also provides upward academic mobility to
those persons who may need to earn a four-year bachelor’s degree in applied science," Cech said.
