The Silver Tsunami: Crisis or Opportunity?

The Boomers are coming, the Boomers are coming – over 77 million of them! People age 50 & older are now the majority of the population in the U.S. The sheer numbers of people who make up the “Silver Tsunami” will change how we work with people in areas from health, housing, & transportation to employment, family relations, social security, and national security. The Montana Gerontology Society & MGEC will focus on many of these issues in April in Missoula.

Dr. Cheryl Woodson, noted geriatrician, author and caregiver, will be the keynote speaker on April 14 at 8:30 a.m. at the Montana Gerontology Society annual conference in Missoula. The session will be open to the public for only $10 per person. Woodson, who teaches that “Age is not a Disease,” will speak on ways to successfully “Surf the Silver Tsunami.” She has taught and practiced geriatric medicine for over 20 years. For 10 of those years, she also served as a caregiver for her mother who died of Alzheimer’s disease. She brings her experience as a daughter and doctor to help families and the eldercare professionals who counsel them.

In her best-selling book, “To Survive Caregiving,” she shares her advice on finding hope, health and health. The book is a practical guide to help families give great care to a parent while protecting the caregivers’ physical, financial, emotional and spiritual health. It is comprehensive, a helpful resource written from the heart, and written in everyday language, not “Doctorspeak.” Even the most painful and difficult topics are made more digestible, because of the humor and real caregiver stories that introduce each section.
