State agencies propose $46M cuts to Montana budget

As the state’s projected mid-2011 budget balance dipped dangerously near red ink, Gov. Brian Schweitzer gained the legal authority Friday to cut spending as agencies offered up $46 million of proposed reductions.

His budget director, David Ewer, signed the official certification letter Friday that by law authorizes Schweitzer to unilaterally reduce general-fund spending for certain state government programs by up to 10 percent.
