Blackfeet Community Hospital working with Browning High School scientists to produce health care professionals

"Leo and I, about a year ago we started talking about how to stimulate kids’ interest in health care fields," said Dr. John Withers of Blackfeet Community Hospital (BCH). He and Browning High School science instructor Leo Bird were on hand at BCH last week, ready to introduce a group of 15 BHS students to the jobs and opportunities that exist at the local IHS hospital.

"Health care has gained about 300,000 jobs last year because employees are needed across the country, and not just doctors. We’re talking about nurses, x-ray techs, pharmacists. And we looked for ways IHS and Browning High School could stimulate the kids. So at the start of last year we had a meeting with [BHS Principal] Janet Guardipee and with [BCH Director] Jim Kennedy and the science teachers, and they all liked it."
