Sidney, Montana Mayor Brett Smelser: Area must stay competitive

During a Kiwanis meeting Thursday, Sidney Mayor Brett Smelser said the city is “bucking the national trend” with its $7 million surplus.

“When I came as mayor, we didn’t have any money,” said Sidney’s 18th mayor, who credited much of the surplus to temporary House Bill 758, which has allowed the Montana oil and gas board to give towns like Sidney, Glendive and Baker funds from the oil and gas production tax since 2005.
