Gazette Opinion: In the future, who will work in Montana?

The most important factor in Montana’s economic future is described on the last page of the annual Labor Day Report from the Montana Department of Industry and Labor.

Under the innocuous title of "Projected Change in Population and Labor Force 2007-2030," data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that in 2013, the state’s labor force is projected to start declining. The decline is expected to continue through 2020 and the workforce is expected to be smaller than it is now through 2030.
