The President and CEO is responsible for providing overall leadership for the organization by working with the Elk Foundation’s Board of Directors and senior staff to establish and fulfill medium and long‑range goals, strategies, plans and policies. This position is also intimately involved in fundraising.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience working at an executive level in a large organization, philanthropic gift development experience, and be able to represent RMEF at the national level. The President and CEO must have a strong commitment and dedication to conserving wildlife habitat and promoting North America’s hunting heritage. The position is located in Missoula, Montana.

Job Summary:

Position Overview

The President and CEO is responsible for providing overall leadership for the organization by working with the Elk Foundation’s Board of Directors and senior staff to establish and fulfill medium and long‑range goals, strategies, plans and policies. This position is also intimately involved in development.

The President and CEO will supervise the Chief Operating Officer (COO). The COO will supervise day-to-day operations and activities of the RMEF to allow the CEO to work extensively on development and the strategic goals and requirements of the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities

General

• Manage the Elk Foundation in a manner that inspires staff and volunteers to achieve superior results.

• Promote a positive image of the RMEF internally with employees and externally with volunteers, donors, media, the conservation community, government agencies, and the public.

• Work effectively with the staff, volunteers, and board to raise funds.

Planning

• Work closely with the staff, volunteers, and board to develop and implement strategic and operational plans that enhance RMEF’s ability to fulfill its mission.

• Develop and implement a three-year business plan and one-year operating plan focused on meeting the goals of RMEF’s strategic plan.

Development

• Take a lead role in development. Take the lead or participate on a team to raise a specific dollar set annually by the RMEF Board of Directors.

• Successfully oversee the creation, implementation, and completion of fundraising campaigns.

• Operate an efficient and effective development program to ensure the RMEF’s financial growth and provide the means to fulfill its mission.

Financial

• Provide strategic leadership on financial issues, actions, and decisions facing the organization.

• Meet or exceed budget expectations for both revenues and expenses each calendar year.

Personnel

• Responsible for developing and communicating strategic vision to motivate and inspire staff.

• Recruit, select and sustain a highly motivated customer‑oriented staff with the experience, skills and qualities required to meet or exceed RMEF goals.

Relationship with Board of Directors

• Report regularly to the Board on progress in meeting RMEF’s mission and organizational goals.

• Provide the Board with timely information to assist in making sound decisions.

• Maintain an honest, open, and constructive relationship with the Board.

Physical Demands

• Must be able and willing to travel extensively by ground and air to meet with prospective donors and supporters, partners, and staff and to attend conferences, seminars, and dedications. Must sit or stand for long periods; use a computer terminal and telephone; reach forward and to the side; bend from both standing and sitting positions; and lift items of various weights; including some heavy lifting.
