Artists learn business skills to make their art pay

Seamus Kiel fit the stereotype of the starving artist. Waiting tables to support his photography, he moved to San Francisco from New York because "I thought it would be easier to be poor here than there."

But two years ago, he’d had enough. "I thought, ‘I’m doing the artist thing successfully, but I’m not successful in a way to pay myself,’ " he recalled. "I don’t know how to market myself, sell myself, find my audience."
