Pharmacy college in Grundy aims to train rural druggists and be an economic curative

Buchanan County is celebrating the opening of its second college in less than a decade.

Seventy-seven students of the University of Appalachia College of Pharmacy’s pioneer class will enter a new lecture hall and classrooms Monday.

Those who attended a two-hour opening celebration learned that the program would be tough.

"This will be the most challenging college of pharmacy in the state of Virginia," said Dr. Edgar Gonzalez, the school president and founding dean.

School officials aim to turn out pharmacists who will serve their communities – especially rural and underserved areas – by promoting healthy lifestyles and creating illness-prevention programs.
