CMR team captures state, heads for national economic competition

"Alan Greenspan is my homeboy" isn’t a real trendy slogan, but that’s the mantra of five C.M. Russell students for the next month.

Seniors Justin Hausauer, Tyler Wolf and Ryan Dalke and juniors Nik Griffith and Jim Cave beat 15 teams from other schools in a state competition in Helena last month, earning a spot in the regional round of the 2005 National Economics Challenge, which takes place April 25 in Minneapolis.

They are the third team from CMR to capture the state title.

The high school doesn’t’ offer an economics class, so the boys read textbooks on their own and met after school to quiz each other.

"This is a motivated group," said Gary Wallace, their adviser. "They were the only team at the state competition that wasn’t part of an economics class. And all the other larger schools sent more than one team to the state competition."
