Bangor is Attractive to Creative Economy

The City of Bangor’s slogan, “Bullish on Business,” holds different meaning for different businesses. It means that Bangor city officials and employees serve both a customer service role to those existing businesses, and a sales role in courting new business in a new, aggressive manner.

Elected officials and city staff have been taking a good look at what Bangor has to offer its citizens and business. Some of the findings are obvious to everyone, while some aren’t. It’s a vibrant, and culturally rich city; it’s safe, and strategically located. Bangor offers “all of the amenities of a big city, without any of the associated problems,” said Bangor City Councilor, Gerry Palmer. “We’re seeing small niche markets enter as people are attracted to our quality of life, businesses that make up the creative economy are chief among them.”

“We need to continually work on attracting the creative economy,” said Palmer, who also chairs the City’s Business and Economic Development Committee. “That business owner might have visited Bangor for the National Folk Festival, seen the Penobscot River, seen how safe it is, and seen how honest and friendly the people are and ask themselves, ‘Why shouldn’t I move my company to Bangor?’ We have to better understand the business decision maker and hit that hot button with them.”
