Voice of Wisdom: Jump-starting entrepreneurs – Network mentors women who are getting their own businesses going

When Marilyn Tang applied for a loan to start a business in 1967, she had hands-on experience and a sound business plan, but her application was rejected because she lacked one thing: a husband to co-sign the loan. Unphased, Tang borrowed money from her boyfriend and parents to start her company and was profitable enough to repay them in six months.

Four decades later, Tang is president and chief executive of Certified Handling Systems and she is helping other women succeed as entrepreneurs. Tang is chairwoman of the Women’s Network for Entrepreneurial Training (WNET), a national program adopted by the Salt Lake Chamber’s Women’s Business Center.

"There was no place to go for help as a woman [when I started my business]," Tang says. "That’s why I enjoy this program so much . . . I like the results we get for young women."

(Do we have similar programs in Montana and other states in the Inland Northwest? If so, please add their contact info in the comments section below. Hopefully this will help more take advantage of these programs. Russ)
