Group hears musings on uses for 160 acres of public land at monthly meeting of City Club Missoula

It’s a question that’s simply stated: Is Missoula making the best use of the 160 acres of public land now occupied by the county fairgrounds, Sentinel High School, the College of Technology, Playfair Park and a handful of other uses.

Ah, but words can be so deceptive. What, for instance, do we mean by best? Beautiful? Useful? Both?

And best for whom? The county fair board? Students? Park users?

It’s an undeniably weighty topic. Which is part of what made it perfect fodder for the monthly meeting of Missoula’s new City Club Missoula.

Many communities across the United States host City Clubs; some have been in existence for many years. The goal of City Club Missoula is to foster communication, discourse and creative thought within our community. The slogans used by some existing City Clubs will give you a sense of what City Clubs are all about. See the following websites:

City Club Missoula will be membership supported with fees on a sliding scale to make it possible for everyone to participate from city leaders and business executives, to students and senior citizens. The strength of the organization will be in the volunteers who organize the speakers, arrange the meetings and help maintain the organization’s neutrality and openness.

Next lunch will be on Feb. 18, 2005. Please mark you calendars and plan on attending.
