Bioneer conference set this weekend in Bozeman

People interested in topics ranging from sustainable agriculture to "green" buildings to running a diesel motor on vegetable oil will gather in Bozeman this weekend.

The second annual Bioneers conference opens Friday, Oct. 15 at the Emerson Center for Arts and Culture and runs through Oct. 17.

Bioneers — a nonprofit organization whose name merges "biological" and "pioneers" — defines itself as one that "strengthens and expands networks of practical visionaries working on behalf of the environment and people."

The group focuses on practical solutions to environmental and social problems, its promotional materials say.

The Bozeman event springs from one that has been taking place in California since 1990. Speakers from that state will be broadcast to the Emerson, alongside live events.

Local speakers include noted journalist and author Richard Manning and Native American advocate and educator Henrietta Mann.

Events and workshops will focus on drumming, growing mushrooms, building leadership skills, ecological medicine, environmental restoration, water supplies and art.

There will be movie screenings and musical performances throughout the three days of events.

Last year’s Bioneers conference attracted more than 300 people, local organizer Joe Porter said, and he expects twice that number this year.
